Title: Empowering nurses to provide palliative care at home survivors of ovarain cancer

Abstract

Nurses provide care to patients in all contexts and at all stages of their lives including palliative care at home. Their contributions are crucial in meeting global goals of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and the Sustainable Developmental Goals (SDG).  This presentation determines reasons for challenges to empower nurses and describes approaches for empowering nurses to provide palliative care for Ovarian Cancer Survivors at home.

Audience learn from presentation:

  • Nurses will be able to understand multimorbidity among Ovarian Cancer Survivors and how to provide Palliative Care at home & coordinate with hospitals needed during Onotherapy (Radio & Chemo) and follow-up visits.
  • Ovarian cancer has emerged as one of the most common malignancies affecting women in India and has shown an increase in the incidence rates over the years, as compared to cervical cancer and breast Cancers which are on a declining trend! In India, ovarian cancer is the third most common gynecological cancer, following breast and cervical cancer. While Ovarian cancer is challenging to treat, as recurrence is common, though complete cure is possible for some, especially in early stages, recurrence and complications are also common due to delayed diagnosis and cost of repeated hospitalization, home based care saves some money. Therefore, homebased care and palliative care during complications is in demand creating job (both in institutions and at home) opportunities. This presentation is based on job facilitation allows other nurses, nursing schools for practical exposures and faculty to expand their practice, research and teaching and make a Nurse’s job more efficient.  Some of the benefits include:
  • Materials and Methods: This case-based review is based on guiding a friend’s wife for last one year’s after total hysterectomy followed by 6 sessions of chemotherapy and additional 3 sessions, followed by remission for 6 months and Pleural effusion managed in USA, another, Pleural and Abdominal tapping of the fluid thrice, followed by third time 6 sessions of milder targeted chemotherapy and repeated intestinal obstructions due to adhesions following surgeries.
  • Outcome: Despite multiple recurrences, chemotherapy, hospitalization thrice for inability to swallow simple vegetarian food, for nearly 100 days in last 2 years, the lady is leading almost normal life for 6months. In this journey the palliative care given by the nurse has been a big-value-add.
