Title: Breast self examination practice and associated factors among women of reproductive age in negele arsi town, oromia region, ethiopia 2023

Abstract

Background: Breast self-examination (BSE) is one of the simplest and most accessible methods for the early detection of breast diseases. Despite the availability of modern screening techniques, over 90% of breast cancer cases are initially identified by women themselves through BSE.

Objective: To assess the practice of breast self-examination and associated factors among women of reproductive age in Negele Arsi Town, Oromia Region, Ethiopia, in 2023.

Method: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 344 women of reproductive age. Participants were selected using a systematic random sampling technique. After checking for completeness, data were coded and entered into Epi Data 3.1, then exported to SPSS version 24 for analysis.

Results: The prevalence of BSE practice among women of reproductive age was 27.1% (95% CI: 22.4–32.3). Factors independently associated with BSE practice included: Educational level: College and above (AOR = 3.04; 95% CI: 1.45–6.39), and secondary education (AOR = 2.89; 95% CI: 1.38–6.04) Having information about BSE (AOR = 6.87; 95% CI: 3.58–13.18) Confidence in performing BSE (AOR = 6.98; 95% CI: 3.36–14.50) Occupation: Private employees were less likely to perform BSE (AOR = 0.29; 95% CI: 0.13–0.63).

Conclusion: This study revealed that only about one-fourth of the participants practiced BSE. Key factors influencing BSE practice included educational status, occupation, access to information, and confidence.
