Title: Sleep quality and associated factors among saudi adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus: A narrative literature review

Abstract

Sleep disturbances are increasingly recognized as a comorbid condition among adults living with diabetes. This review explores the prevalence and predictors of poor sleep quality in diabetic populations in Saudi Arabia. A systematic review was conducted using PubMed, CINAHL, MEDLINE, Web of Science, and SCOPUS. Search terms included 'diabetes', 'sleep quality', 'sleep problem or disturbance', 'Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index', 'sleep quality measurement', and 'Saudi Arabia'. Studies published between 2010 and 2024 were screened following PRISMA guidelines. Nine studies met the inclusion criteria. Prevalence of poor sleep ranged from 55.4% to 100%. Common predictors included female gender, poor glycemic control, long disease duration, comorbidities, and psychosocial stress. Sleep problems are highly prevalent in Saudi adults with diabetes. Routine sleep assessment should be integrated into diabetic care. Future research should consider objective tools like actigraphy.

Audience take away from my presentation:

  • The present findings mirror the broader international understanding that sleep and metabolic regulation are intrinsically linked.
  • From a clinical standpoint, the integration of routine sleep assessments into diabetes management programs is warranted.
  • Clinicians in Saudi Arabia should consider routine sleep screening as part of comprehensive diabetes management.
  • Policy makers and healthcare leaders are encouraged to support public health initiatives that target modifiable behaviors such as screen time, stress management, and sleep hygiene.
  • Ultimately, improving sleep quality in diabetic populations may offer a scalable and cost-effective means to enhance metabolic control, reduce complications, and improve quality of life.
