Title:
Leveraging technology and innovation in nursing practice to improve patient outcomes in low resource settings
Abstract

In today’s evolving healthcare landscape, technological innovation is not a luxury, it is a necessity. This presentation explores practical, cost-effective innovations in nursing that can significantly improve patient outcomes in low-resource settings, particularly in parts of Africa and other developing regions. From mobile health apps and tele-nursing platforms to solar-powered cold chain systems for vaccines and simplified digital record-keeping, we will examine real-world tools that nurses can use to save lives despite limited infrastructure. The audience will gain insight into how nurses can adapt and use simple technology to enhance decision-making, monitor patients remotely, improve communication, and promote timely interventions. We will also highlight case studies from rural clinics where digital innovations reduced maternal and child mortality and improved chronic disease management.

What will the audience take away from your presentation?

  • Practical examples of low-cost nursing technologies that work in under-resourced settings.

  • Knowledge on integrating mobile health (mHealth) and tele-nursing into daily practice.

  • How to improve patient education and compliance using digital tools.

  • Strategies for advocating for technology adoption in your health facility.

  • Inspiration to initiate or participate in innovation-driven healthcare improvements

How The Audience Will Be Able To Use What They Learn

Participants will be equipped with ideas they can implement or adapt in their workplaces immediately. For instance, they will learn how to use simple mobile apps for triage, reminders, or follow-up care, even in areas with poor internet. These ideas can also inspire nurses to seek partnerships with tech developers or NGOs

This knowledge will help nurses manage large caseloads more effectively, reduce documentation errors, and support better patient monitoring, ultimately reducing preventable deaths and complications.

Yes, this presentation offers opportunities for academic faculty to explore innovation-focused research and develop training modules or nursing curricula around tech integration.

The solutions discussed are low-cost, scalable, and adaptable, designed specifically for environments with limited resources. This presentation simplifies complex health delivery problems and shows how nurses can be innovators in their own practice.

Other Benefits:

  • Encourages creative thinking and leadership in nursing.

  • Builds digital literacy among health professionals.

  • Aligns with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for health and innovation.
